There are many great train books. The following is a list of the ones that I enjoyed the most. I have read a lot of most of them, but rarely cover to cover. Some are very large books, in particular, the first one. The Birth of California Narrow Gauge. This is a really great book and easy to read. And for its size it is quite a good buy, but the contents make it worth much more.

• Grand Central Terminal - Railroads, Engineering, and Architecture in New York City by Kurt C. Schlichting. - This is a very enjoyable book that I am currently reading. It covers the people involved very well and a lot of the issues they had to deal with. Amazon.com
